Berlin's Kreuzberg's district is one of the most multicultural in the the city. It is home to a multi-ethnic mix of residents including a large Turkish community. Every year a colourful carnival celebrates the area's diversity.

Berlin is not only Germany's new and old capital, but it is also considered to be one of Europe's most important junctions and one of the most visited cities on the continent. With a total population of 3.4 million, Berlin is without doubt Germany's most multicultural metropolis.

One of the largest multicultural districts in Berlin is Kreuzberg which partially owes its popularity to the turbulent history of the alternative movement and legendary squatter scene of the 1970s and 1980s. However, the area is also known far beyond the confines of Berlin for one demographic feature: Almost a third of the 160,000 residents are immigrants, many so called "guest workers" from Turkey and their descendants. Every year the colourful street parade called the Carnival of Cultures winds through the streets of Kreuzberg celebrating the city's diversity and presenting the mix of residents who shape the district.

A must-see area in Kreuzberg is the so-called Kiez around the Bergmannstrasse. Its beautiful 19th century houses with richly decorated facades, staircases, and patios tell of the history of the area. In recent years the Kiez has not only become a magnet for visitors, but Germans - newcomers as well as old-established Berliners - have flocked to the area. Therefore you'll meet people of every creed and colour - a blend which shapes the surrounding neighbourhood.

Turkish market at Maybachufer
Bordering the districts of Kreuzberg and Neukölln a traditional Turkish market can be found on the banks of Maybach (Maybachufer). Bargains include a wide range of inexpensive vegetables, textiles, and food. But, the eastern atmosphere is an absolute experience even for visitors who do not want to buy anything. The market takes place every Tuesday and Friday between 11a.m. and 6:30p.m. And what is more, if you go around closing-time, you can pick up stuff for next to nothing.
